The first step of creating an effective business website is finding the right web hosting company. The options can be overwhelming if you are new to web publishing, but there are some ways to narrow down your search and find the web host that is right for your business.

Understand Your Hosting Needs

Before you begin shopping for a web host, consider what your website will require. Think about the content you plan to use and how interactive you want the site to be. Keep your content needs in mind as you shop, and make sure that any good web host you are interested in provides the features your site will need. The amount of support you will need for designing and uploading your site also makes a difference. If you don't know the first thing about websites, you will be better served by a hosting company

Quality Hosting

If you're like most people at the beginning of each year, you'll review your business, look at where you are spending money, and look for things to cut or ways to save a few bucks. That's why I'm going to bring up something we all have to deal with: web hosting. In all the time I've been building websites, I've probably tried about 50 hosting companies. To be honest most of them sucked–a lot. Two that I liked were Globat and HostGator; however, when those hosting companies experienced the "digg effect," the hosting buckled. In the worst circumstances, the hosting company shut the site down, which kinda defeate

Ways to Get Traffic Besides Search

Over the last year or two, I've written a number of articles about different ways to get traffic to your website. Here is something of a compilation of these concepts. Obviously search engine optimization is an important component, but I'm going to leave that out here.

Some sites have been known to get even more traffic from Facebook than they get from Google. I suggest setting up a Facebook page. Compete recently found that demographics of Facebook users strongly resemble demog

If your site isn't a back-link superstar, you'll never be an internet mogul! My sincere desire is that you can use this article to find more success in your online endeavors.

Why most articles about getting links aren't worth time it takes to read them:

  • Most (I've seen a few exceptions) don't have a single original idea.
  • Most contain too much technical jargon that no one understands. What's the point of creating a list for the 3 people in the known universe that know what a 'meme tracker' is? The 3 people that know what a 'meme tracker' is can now proceed to close their browsers and start making fun of this article. :)
  • Most are lists of links to other lists that have links to other lists that have links to other lists that list the links - ok, you get the point.
  • Most don't tell you

For bloggers and social media marketers, the desire to increase numbers of unique visitors to a site often overshadows an effort to increase the average number of pageviews per visitor. For those who are getting a high percentage of visitors via social media sites, convincing visitors to view multiple pages is sometimes seen as a lost cause. In reality, the blogger and the designer do have some influence on visitors in terms of encouraging extended visits, and even a small increase in average pageviews per visitor can result in significant gains in overall pageviews.

There have been several guides written in the past on the subject of increasing or maximizing pageviews, of course some are better than others. Some of the advice given falls into the category o
